Jalapeno Tree

Jalapeno Tree family-owned restaurant chain has been a local feature for over 25 years and has spread to 13 other locations in East Texas. Once you visit and try their delicious food you’ll understand why they’re one of our favorites. For a starter, try the shrimp nachos with sauteed shrimp, onions, peppers, and cheese, or the white queso, a spicy white cheese dip with fresh jalapeno.

For a main, we recommend the chili Relleno beef, a poblano pepper stuffed with taco beef meat and cheese and topped with sauce. Vegetarians are not forgotten, and a great choice is the spinach enchilada, with baby leaf spinach and Monterey jack cheese in a flour tortilla and topped with sour cream sauce. Don’t forget to save room for dessert, and the options of sopapilla, brownie, and apple pie make it very difficult to choose. Jalapeno can be found at 1112 E. Tyler Street.

El San Luis

El San Luis is located at 1500 E. Tyler Street, and from a small beginning has grown to become a firm favorite in Athens. The atmosphere is relaxed and homely, and the service is very quick and friendly. The fresh tortilla chips and homemade salsa are a great snack while you choose from the menu. They are open from 7.30 am daily except for Mondays, and they have both Mexican and American breakfast choices.

They have a great selection of burritos, enchiladas, and tamales, but their specials are the star attractions. As a main, we love the guisado, beef, or chicken tips cooked with onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, and covered in their secret sauce. The Mojarro, a whole tilapia deep fried and served with rice, salad, and sliced avocado.

Restaurant y Taqueria Jalisco’s

Restaurant y Taqueria Jalisco’s is a beloved center for excellent Mexican food in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The decor is old-style with a traditional feel, and the food is incredible. We’ve often said they serve the best fajitas in Athens. Their portions are large, and for diners with a healthy appetite, this is a bonus.

We enjoy the tortilla soup starter, with chicken, tortilla slices, tomato, onion, cilantro, and Monterey jack cheese. As our main course, the molcajete with beef and chicken fajitas and shrimp grilled in their special sauce and then topped with Monterey jack cheese is the firm favorite. The restaurant is located at 506 W. Corsicana Street.
