Bensons has been a staple in Athens since it first opened its door in 1949, and, according to the people of Athens, it’s home to the best burgers in the area. The place is family-owned and operated, and they pay attention to every detail to bring you excellent sandwiches with homemade buns and fresh veggies.

The menu includes a fabulous chicken sandwich, the locally famous Texas toast patty melt, a barbecue sandwich, and the traditional ham and cheese. All the sides come in generous portions and are cooked to perfection. Sides include traditional and curly fries, tater tots, sweet potato fries, mozzarella sticks, and onion rings. 

2. Cherry Laurel Bakery, Cafe, and Catering

Cherry Laurel has some of Athens’s crispiest, most delicious toasted sandwiches. They also offer salads made from locally sourced, fresh ingredients. The best ones include the Cherry Laurel salad and the Thai salad. 

A great complement to your sandwich is a piping hot soup, and here you can find excellent choices such as the cheddar broccoli soup or the traditional tomato soup (perfect with a grilled cheese sandwich!). 3. Shenanigans Deli

Shenanigan is a local mom-and-pop shop and has been serving the Athens community for a long time. The menu includes some local favorites, such as the Italian sandwich and a variety of subway-style sandwiches with generous fillings and delicious sauces. While you are there, do not leave without trying a dessert! The lemon coconut cake is to die for. 

4. Callaways Coffee and Bistro

Park the Chevrolet Equinox downtown and walk to Callaways for a fantastic lunch. The place opened its doors in 2016, and since then, it has become one of the local’s favorite spots for coffee, pastries, and sandwiches. You can find amazing sandwiches, delicious specialty coffee, and sumptuous desserts at this adorable and cozy coffee house. We recommend the loaded grilled cheese or the egg bacon sandwich on croissant bread.
